Biswanath Kundu, born on 8 January 1963 at Belghoria, Kolkata, West Bengal, India, is an Indian author, poet, critic, researcher and retired Accounts Official of Indian Railways. He completed his schooling at Belghoria High School and pursued his college education at BKC College under the University of Calcutta. A science graduate with a deep and enduring passion for literature, Kundu is a member of the Guild of Indian English Writers, Editors and Critics (GIEWEC). Over the years, he has made significant contributions to poetry, fiction, literary criticism, translation and research. He has authored fifteen books, including seven books of poetry, and his poems, articles and critical writings have been published in prestigious anthologies and internationally reputed journals. He has also served as Review Editor of the International Journal on Multicultural Literature (IJML) and Platform.
Kundu’s literary career began with My Thoughts, published in 2007, followed by Thirty Tiny Tales (2008), Spellbound Children of the Soil (2013), A Journey in Poems (2014), Quest of Mind (2016), My Thoughts-HD (2016), Let Thy Wish Be Filled (2017), Music of Life (2018), The Story of an Unknown Kolkatan (2020), Recipe of Life (2020), Poetry Dot 6 (2021), Decoding Happy Isle (2022), On a Few Gems from Rock Pebbles, Nirbachito Chotogalpo (2022), and Critical Sensibilities: Insightful Appraisals (2025). Several of these works were published by Anjali Publishers, Kolkata, Authors Press, New Delhi, and Rohini Nandan, Kolkata, while some are available in Kindle and other digital editions. His works reflect his multifaceted literary sensibility and his sustained interest in human life, society, culture, philosophy and the complexities of the human mind.
As a literary critic and researcher, Kundu has written extensively on Indian English literature, modern poetry, Bengali literature, humanistic values and contemporary literary thought. His research interests include digital humanism, modern Indo-English poetry, the Baul movement, modern Bengali drama, partition trauma, Indian thought systems, freedom, love and the works of poets and writers such as K. V. Dominic, Manas Bakshi and Jayanta Mahapatra. He has also collaborated with Dr. Ramesh Chandra Mukhopadhyaya on critical and literary projects and jointly translated selected short stories of Dr. K. V. Dominic into Bengali with Dr. Sabita Chakraborty. His latest book, Critical Sensibilities: Insightful Appraisals, published by Authors Press, New Delhi, in 2025, is a collection of literary studies and reviews covering diverse contemporary writers and books, including works associated with Punjab, Kerala and Sikkim. The book was reviewed by Dr. Manas Bakshi in The Daily Guardian on 11 August 2025.
Through his poetry, fiction, criticism, translation and research, Biswanath Kundu continues to explore the relationship between literature and life, with particular emphasis on human values, social realities, cultural consciousness and the inner dimensions of human existence.
