
Dr. Bemina JA is an experienced nursing educator, mental health nursing specialist, researcher, and academic administrator with over twenty years of dedicated service in nursing education, clinical practice, research, and institutional leadership. She is currently serving as Head of the Department and Assistant Professor in the Department of Mental Health Nursing at ESIC College of Nursing, Gulbarga, Karnataka, under the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Government of India. Since joining the institution on 27 June 2013, she has made substantial contributions to strengthening psychiatric nursing education, promoting evidence-based clinical practice, guiding student research, and enhancing academic quality assurance activities within the institution.
Dr. Bemina completed her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Government College of Nursing, Bangalore, in 2004. She subsequently obtained her Master of Science in Mental Health Nursing from East West College of Nursing, Bangalore, in 2008. Demonstrating a strong commitment to higher education and scholarly advancement, she is currently pursuing her Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Psychiatric Nursing at Laxmi Memorial College of Nursing affiliated with Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bengaluru, with completion expected in 2026. In addition to her nursing qualifications, she earned a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from Mahadeveappa Law College, Bidar, in 2007 and a Master of Science in Psychology from IGNOU, New Delhi, in 2019. This multidisciplinary academic background has enabled her to integrate nursing, psychology, mental health, ethics, and legal perspectives into teaching, research, and professional practice.
Her professional career reflects progressive academic and administrative responsibilities. She began her teaching career as a Tutor at Smt. MC Vasantha College of Nursing, Bidar, serving from November 2003 to March 2006. After completing her postgraduate studies, she continued at the same institution as Assistant Professor from May 2008 to September 2010. She then served as Vice Principal at Akareem College of Nursing, Gulbarga, from October 2010 to June 2013, where she gained extensive experience in institutional administration, faculty supervision, student management, and regulatory coordination. Her combined teaching and administrative experience includes more than 18 years of postgraduate teaching experience and a total professional experience of 20 years and 5 months.
Dr. Bemina has actively pursued continuing professional development through specialized training programmes. She completed Diabetes Education training conducted by Christian Medical College, Vellore, training in Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (MCBT) at NIMHANS, Bengaluru, a Diploma in Community Mental Health Nursing at NIMHANS, Simulation Training organized by the Indian Nursing Council, and State Level Trainer preparation for Mental, Neurological, and Substance Use Disorders organized by the National Health System Resource Center. She has also undergone RAATI training conducted by RGUHS and holds certification as a Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) provider from the American Heart Association.
Her research interests include mental health promotion, psychiatric rehabilitation, stress prevention, resilience building, mindfulness-based interventions, women’s reproductive mental health, evidence-based nursing practice, simulation-based education, child and adolescent mental health, geriatric mental health, community mental health, nursing education, competency-based learning, patient safety, and psychosocial well-being. She has authored and co-authored numerous research articles published in peer-reviewed national and international journals. Her publications address diverse topics such as stress and coping strategies among sexual minorities, bullying behaviour among school children, mindfulness-based cognitive therapy, premenstrual syndrome, psychiatric nursing care quality, sleep quality among nurses, climate change and health awareness, maternal and child health, urinary tract infection prevention among antenatal mothers, psychotherapy interventions, and parental concerns related to preterm infants. She also serves as a reviewer for various academic journals, contributing to the advancement of nursing scholarship and research quality. In addition, she has two patents currently under technical review, reflecting her interest in innovation and applied healthcare solutions.
As an academic administrator, Dr. Bemina has held several important responsibilities, including coordination of undergraduate and postgraduate nursing programmes, supervision and mentorship of faculty members and nursing students, organization of workshops, seminars, conferences, continuing nursing education programmes, and research activities, and service as an external examiner, dissertation evaluator, and research guide for undergraduate and postgraduate students. She has coordinated research committee activities, maintained academic documentation, monitored quality assurance initiatives, and facilitated curriculum implementation and academic planning. She has also participated in university-level activities as a Local Inspection Committee member, Ad Hoc Inspector, Special Flying Squad member, and Observer-cum-Seating Squad member for MBBS, BDS, and AYUSH examinations under Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences.
Her professional competencies encompass comprehensive nursing assessment, clinical decision-making, medication administration, infection prevention and control, intravenous therapy, perioperative care, emergency nursing, wound care, patient counselling, documentation, simulation-based education, quality assurance, clinical supervision, and interprofessional collaboration.
