Dr. R. Pavithra is a distinguished Public Health Dentist, accomplished academic, and committed community health educator with over seven years of dedicated faculty service at the Department of Public Health Dentistry, Sri Venkateswara Dental College & Hospital, Chennai. Currently serving as Associate Professor and Incharge of the department, she exemplifies the finest qualities of an academician — a researcher who translates evidence into practice, a mentor who shapes future clinicians, and a public health advocate who carries dentistry beyond the clinic walls and into the heart of the community.
Dr. Pavithra completed her Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) from Sri Venkateswara Dental College & Hospital, Thalambur, affiliated to Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University, in 2013 — a journey that began with outstanding academic distinction. She was recognised as the Batch Topper and was honoured with the prestigious Best Outgoing Student Award for the 2008–2013 batch. She went on to pursue her postgraduate specialisation in Public Health Dentistry, completing her Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) from Ragas Dental College & Hospital, Uthandi, in 2017. Driven by a belief in the intersection of clinical practice and management science, she further earned a Post Graduate Diploma in Healthcare Management from the Welingkar Institute of Management, Mumbai, in 2020. She is currently pursuing a Masters in Health Professions Education (MHPE) from Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth, Pondicherry — a testament to her unwavering commitment to evolving as an educator and academic leader.
At the heart of Dr. Pavithra’s academic identity lies a deep passion for research. She has authored eleven peer-reviewed publications in indexed journals, spanning a diverse range of subjects — from salutogenesis and sense of coherence in school children, fluorosis mitigation and behaviour change communication, to the application of artificial intelligence in dentistry, and nano-chitosan composites in bone tissue regeneration. Her research has particularly focused on developing and validating an Integrated Behaviour Change Model to enhance oral health status and health beliefs among 13–15 year old school children in Chennai city — a body of work that has received national and international recognition. Her ResearchGate profile reflects a Research Interest Score of 41.0, with 2,398 reads and 24 citations, underscoring her growing scholarly visibility.
Dr. Pavithra’s contribution to the academic and scientific community extends well beyond her publications. She has presented a paper at the landmark 1st IAPHD International Conference held in Thailand in September 2024 — where she won the First Best Paper Award, a distinction that placed her at the pinnacle of public health dental research in the country. She has also participated in the Virtual International Dental Education Conference (VIDYEN 3.0).
Beyond the laboratory and the lecture hall, Dr. Pavithra is a tireless community health worker. She has organised and participated in oral health screening camps and health education sessions for school children, adults, and the elderly. Her outreach efforts have earned felicitations from SMK Fomra Institute, the Rotary Club, and Vivekananda Vidhyalaya. She has served as Scientific Chairperson for paper and poster presentation sessions at the MIDAS Scientific Fest (IDA Madras Branch) and IAPHD National Conference, and was invited as an expert Resource Person for a Faculty Development Programme on Technology-Assisted Research Methodology Training, organised by the Association of Indian Universities, in March 2026.
Her commitment to lifelong learning is equally notable. Dr. Pavithra has attended over ten academic workshops — including advanced training in statistics, qualitative research, and systematic reviews — and fourteen Continuing Dental Education programmes spanning research methodology, dental ethics, tobacco cessation, infection control, and bioethics. In 2023, she completed specialised training in Comprehensive Systematic Reviews and Scoping Reviews at the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI), University of Adelaide — one of the most rigorous research methodology programmes available globally. She has also completed an E-Course on Tobacco Control from the Public Health Foundation of India and a certified course in tobacco cessation intervention from the Cancer Institute (WIA).
A scholar of rare versatility, Dr. R. Pavithra represents the ideal of an academician in Public Health Dentistry — one who publishes, teaches, mentors, serves the community, and continuously reinvests in her own growth. Her career embodies the conviction that public health dentistry is not merely a speciality, but a calling: to build healthier communities, one informed individual at a time.
