Prerona Boruah

Dr. Prerona Boruah was born on 18th July 1992 in Mariani, Assam, India. From her earliest years, she demonstrated both curiosity and determination, qualities that would later define her journey as a scientist in the field of immunology. Growing up in Assam, she was inspired by the resilience of her community and the profound impact of health and disease on everyday life. This early awareness shaped her motivation to pursue a career where she could contribute directly to understanding, preventing, and treating human diseases.

After completing her schooling in Mariani, Dr. Boruah pursued a Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology, followed by a Master of Science in Biotechnology in Shillong, India. During these formative years, she cultivated a solid foundation in molecular biology, biochemistry, and applied biotechnology, excelling academically while developing a deep interest in the functioning of the human immune system. Her graduate training exposed her to research methodologies, and she began to see immunology not only as a subject of scientific inquiry but as a path where she could dedicate her career.

With a passion to advance her expertise and to explore global perspectives in biomedical research, Dr. Boruah undertook her Ph.D. in Immunology in China. Her doctoral training was transformative, offering her opportunities to work with diverse international teams, advanced technologies, and highly complex experimental systems. During her Ph.D., she delved deeply into the mechanisms of immune responses, host–pathogen interactions, and translational approaches in immunology. Her rigorous training instilled in her the scientific discipline of precision, innovation, and perseverance, which continue to guide her career.

Following her doctoral work, Dr. Boruah embarked on a career that seamlessly bridges academia and industry. Over the past seven years, she has accumulated rich experience across both settings, making her uniquely positioned to address complex scientific problems while also translating discoveries into practical solutions. In academia, she has mentored students, published widely, and contributed to collaborative research projects at both national and international levels. In industry, she has brought her scientific expertise to bear on translational challenges, bridging laboratory discoveries with real-world applications in diagnostics, therapeutics, and biotechnology innovation.

Her academic and professional journey is marked by outstanding research productivity. Dr. Boruah has authored and co-authored over 25 peer-reviewed scientific papers, many of which appear in respected journals in immunology and biotechnology. These publications reflect her versatility as a researcher, spanning fundamental studies on immune system mechanisms to applied research with implications for human health. Her work has consistently combined rigorous experimental design with forward-looking perspectives on how immunology can contribute to solving pressing health challenges.

In addition to her publications, Dr. Boruah holds two provisional patents, reflecting her drive to translate research insights into technologies with tangible societal impact. These patents represent her commitment to innovation, ensuring that scientific discoveries extend beyond academic circles to address unmet needs in healthcare and biotechnology.

Her research interests lie primarily in immunology, with a focus on host defense, immune modulation, and translational applications in therapy and vaccine development. She is particularly drawn to questions at the interface of basic and applied immunology, how the immune system can be better understood at the molecular level, and how that understanding can be harnessed for improved diagnostics, treatments, and preventive strategies. Dr. Boruah has also been an advocate of interdisciplinary collaboration, often working across biotechnology, pharmacology, and molecular medicine to address immunological challenges in novel ways.

Beyond her technical achievements, Dr. Boruah is recognized as a dedicated mentor and collaborator. She has trained young researchers and contributed to capacity-building within her institutions. Her leadership style combines scientific rigor with empathy and inclusiveness, creating environments where innovation thrives.

Her contributions have also been acknowledged through invitations to present at conferences, participation in international collaborations, and recognition within both academic and industrial research communities. Dr. Boruah’s ability to move seamlessly between academia and industry is rare and underscores her vision of science as a bridge between discovery and application.

Born in Assam and trained across India and China, Dr. Boruah embodies the spirit of a truly global scientist, bringing diverse perspectives to her work while staying rooted in her commitment to improving human health. Her journey from Jorhat to international laboratories highlights not only personal resilience but also the importance of cross-cultural scientific collaboration in today’s world.

Looking ahead, Dr. Boruah aspires to continue her impactful work in immunology, building upon her research experience to contribute to global health solutions. Her vision is to harness the immune system’s potential in addressing infectious diseases, autoimmune conditions, and cancer, while also ensuring that innovations are accessible and beneficial to wider communities.
